MONACA, PA -- On Saturday, December 29th, The Bryant & Stratton College - Buffalo Bobcats men's basketball team (8-5) played their final game of 2018, beating the Point Park University Pioneers (5-7, 2-2 RSC) for second time this season, 62-59.
Originally, this contest was set to be played in downtown Pittsburgh, PA on the Pioneer's home floor; however, after some scheduling conflicts, Point Park University moved the playing site 30 miles down the highway to the Beaver Dome at the Community College of Beaver County.
Both teams were also hoping to leave 2018 on a winning note. The Bobcats entered the game after losing to a tough Stratford University squad in the Villa Maria Holiday Classic, while the Pioneers were looking to get a win after losing to the University of Rio Grande (OH) Redstorm, dropping a close one by only 5 points.
While there were relatively high stakes for both teams, the game started off slow. The Bobcats and the Pioneers combined for 18 turnovers by halftime and Bryant & Stratton College - Buffalo shot a dismal 34% in the first half, only to surprisingly be up by 10 points, 32-22. Per usual, Tyrell Mitchell and Nicc Johnson led all scorers with 9 points and 6 points, and for Point Park University, Kyle Carrington carried the load with 4 points at the midway point.
In the second half, the Bobcats continued to hold their lead for much of the half, but never really extended it. Taijay Williams found the hot hand from deep and then knocked down some midrange jumpshots to match two Point Park runs. Willams finished with 16 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists with one of his most impressive performances of the year.
Tyrell Mitchell also found his rhythm in the second half, throwing down a tip-in dunk off an offensive rebound. Mitchell finished with a game high 19 points.
Meanwhile, to keep his team in the game, Kyle Carrington went to work and scored 14 of his 18 points slashing to the basket and scoring inside. Carrington did enough to pull his team within 2 points in the final minute of the game, but it just wasn't enough. The Bobcats held on to the lead and pulled out the win.
