The USCAA National Championship will be played at Penn State Fayette Main Arena, March 6-9th. Unlike a lot of the teams with long traditions competing in the tournament, this is the first year reinstating the men’s basketball program at Bryant & Stratton College, and many of the players and coaches are home-grown prospects found right here in Buffalo, NY. Head coach and Buffalo native, Damone Brown, was also a former standout at Syracuse University from 1997-2001 and a second-round draft pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. The Bobcat's only senior, and a likely candidate for All-American honors, shooting guard, Nicc Johnson, spent most of his last year on the hardwood slashing to the hoop and burning the nets from deep, averaging 19.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Also a strong candidate for All-American honors is his teammate, Tyrell Mitchell. Mitchell established himself as a slashing, multi-talented 6’3” 212 lb guard, averaging 19.2 points per game and shooting 53.2% from the field. However, this team is more than just a couple of good players; they excel on and off the court as a group of hard-working and dedicated young student-athletes. In fact, six players on this year's team made the Dean's List, and aside from their stand-out performances on the hardwood, they were also scholars in the classroom, proving themselves valuable parts of the campus community.
As a team, the Bobcats averaged 80.6 points per game and led the USCAA in offensive rebounding with 16.3 offensive rebounds per game. Johnson and Mitchell went back and forth all season as top ten scorers in the country and are currently tied for third place nationally in points per game. Earlier this season, the Bobcats also knocked off #1 Villa Maria on their home floor. Just weeks from now, the team will be putting all their hard work on the line in Uniontown, PA. For those not making the trip, we hope that you will continue to root for the Bobcats from home. The USCAA will be streaming the games live here.
