Bobcats Open Season at NAIA no. 13 Cumberlands (KY)
BECKLEY, WV - The Bryant & Stratton Buffalo women's basketball team opened up its 2023-24 campaign on Friday at the Hampton Inn Beckley Golden Bear Classic against The University of the Cumberlands (KY), one of the top NAIA teams in the country. The Bobcats came up on the wrong end of a 96-49 result, but gained some valuable experience against elite competition inside a 3,000 seat venue.
"We have almost an entirely new team that's still coming together," Head Coach Brittnee Perry said. "We scheduled these games on purpose to show our ladies what the best of the best looks like. We now have a measuring stick. We have to stick to our plan and our process. We have a long and exciting schedule ahead of us."
Junior guard Ashlynn Johnson led Buffalo with 16 points on 6-9 shooting. She was 3-4 from beyond the arc and added five rebounds in her first game as a Bobcat. Senior Saige Roberts was the other Bobcat in double figures as the transfer chipped in 10 points.
A major difference in the game was in the turnover and rebound department. Buffalo committed 34 turnovers and were out-rebounded 51-38. Cumberlands also shot 46.9% from the floor to Buffalo's 31.6%.
Treanna Blenman and Ja'Da White McConnel each scored six for Buffalo as well. Senior returner Chy Ison finished with four points, five rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. Janae Brannon had a team-high six rebounds to go along with four assists.
Cumberlands entered the game ranked 13th in the NAIA Preseason National Coaches Poll and were 24-8 last year, advancing to the Sweet 16.
